Have Yourself a Harry Little Christmas... in June

Happy anniversary of the end of the Second Wizarding War! Well, not quite. That day was May 2, 1998 and this podcast is coming out in June. Blame DJ Sara——Mehera and Claire recorded the show on May 2 but it is only now being released. Perhaps it is for the best. You might be a bit more emotional right now if it truly were the 13th anniversary of the death of so many of our favorite HP characters. Although, as Mehera notes, it's only six more years till the epilogue occurs... if you do the math, some of our new favorites (*cough*ALBUSSEVERUS*cough*) have already been born. But I digress.

This week is our bi-annual holiday show, featuring songs from charity wrock compilation albums. There are some really great songs packed in here, so don't miss out!

Interested? It's never too late to get involved in an online Harry Potter community! (Except maybe in the case of this year's LeakyCon, as conference tickets are starting to sell out!)

Ron.. Ron... Ron WEASLEY (& Dobby too!)

Our utmost apologies for the delays recently! The week before last, Mehera was tragically sick and the show was cancelled. Last week, Sara was traveling. But finally, we're back and happy to present our special show on two of the Potterverse's most lovable characters: Ron Weasley and Dobby the House Elf.

Why these two, you ask? Well, dear readers, just last Wednesday, Ron turned 31 years old! (The math: Harry's parents tombstones say Oct. 31, 1981. Harry was 1 when his parents died, putting his birth at July 31, 1980. Ron, also in Harry's year, had to have been born then on March 1, 1980. School begins in your eleventh year—1991. This confirms outside reports that the books take place in the years 1991-1997. Finally, it's currently 2011… and ta-da! Happy 31st birthday, Ron!)

As for dear little Dobby, estimates by the Lexicon put his death somewhere in March, and so this year, a kind soul created a Facebook event to declare March 1 Dobby Remembrance Day. It caught on, eventually having thousands of event attendees. And so it is.

Now, time for the podcast.

Season 3 - Episode 4 - Ron and Dobby

"Alohomora" by Pogo (last.fm)
"The Weasle" by Harry and the Potters
"Wizard Chess" by Harry and the Potters
"Your Flying Car" by the Whomping Willows

"Eulogy for an Acromantula" by the Mudbloods
"Follow the Spiders" Harry and the Potters
"The Weasleys" by the Remus Lupins
"Freckled" by I Speak Tree
"I Heart Weasleys" by Ministry of Magic
"The Weasley Family" by the Holyhead Harpies feat. Catchlove and Oliver Boyd & the Rememberalls
"Why Don't We Do It in the Burrow?" by Tonks and the Aurors
"The Burrow" by RiddleTM feat. the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office

"Hey, Hey Ron" by the Hermione Crookshanks Experience

His eyes are as green as a fresh-pickled toad...

His hair is as dark as a blackboard.
I wish he was mine, he's really divine,
The hero who conquered the Dark Lord.

Happy [belated] Valentine's Day from your loves at the Witching Hour, and the rest of the wizarding community, too. Here's to hoping it was more love-filled and less awkward than most.

If you're just not finished enjoying V-day, consider reading a hilarious but perceptive article about the singing valentine mystery of The Chamber of Secrets. Oh, Harry Potter Lexicon, you take these things so seriously.

On the Witching Hour, we celebrated in the usual wizard fashion, with singing cherubs and of course romantic and awkward wizard rock. So without further ado...

Hunt for the Horcruxes; also, SIX DAYS

Photo courtesy of Spencerette via Flickr.
Finally! A new podcast! After last week's recording fiasco we figured out the trouble and got the podcast recording software to behave again.

This week's theme drew inspiration (and wrock) heavily from Creevey Crisis's album VII, which chronicles each of the seven Horcruxes with a different song. It's kind of metal-y, so if that's your thing, definitely check it out. We may just have to add (w)metal to the growing list of genres played on the Witching Hour.

And remember, if you don't want to directly download the link here, you can always use iTunes to do your podcatching for you. Simply open iTunes, go to the iTunes store, and type "the Witching Hour" into the search bar. In the results, scroll down to the podcasts section. We're on the main page, on the right (the music one, next to the wiccan podcast). Otherwise, here you go:

Episode 10 - Season 2 - Hunt for the Horcruxes

This week's tunes:
"The Blood of a Prince" by Harry and the Potters

Read about us in The Pioneer!

This week in Whitman College's student-run newspaper, The Pioneer, The Witching Hour was featured as the KWCW radio show of the week! It featured a short bio on the DJs, a history of the show, and some of our favorite tracks. Side note: Pio, we love you, but you need to work on your copy editing skillz. Also, you changed what we submitted. Uncool. If you're on campus, pick up a copy. If not, read it here:

Every Christmas the Weasley family gathers in their living room to listen to the latest hits on the Witching Hour. However, since the mysterious disappearance of the hosts of the Witching Hour from the Wizarding Wireless Network studios in Diagon Alley in 1998, Christmas has not been the same. Yet recent reports of wizard rock on the radio suggest the two hosts are alive and wrockin’. They appear to have relocated to Walla Walla, Washington and have taken the aliases of Mehera “this guitar is a horcrux” Nori and Sara “we r wizards” Rasmussen. Neither Mehera nor Sara are entirely certain how they ended up among muggles, but continue to celebrate the tales of their good friend Harry Potter and his triumph over He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. In January of 2010, Sara and Mehera revived their wizard rock radio programme for the sake of maintaining their wizard culture, and for the musical enjoyment of muggles. Wizard rock is an all-encompassing genre of (w)rock, (w)folk, (w)techno, (w)rap, and lyrics written to the tune of J.K. Rowling. Though Sara and Mehera are far from their home, the Weasleys are pleased to have the show back on the air (and on iTunes) once again.

Wizard Favorites:
“I am a Wizard” by Harry and the Potters
“Teenage Werewolf” by the Remus Lupins
“My Dad is Rich” by Draco and the Malfoys
“Ginny Gets Around” by Gred and Forge
“Voldemort, Peace Off!” by the Basilisk in Your Pasta

Catch The Witching Hour on Tuesdays from 3-4 p.m. on 90.5 FM Walla Walla, streaming online at KWCW.net, or as a podcast on iTunes. Visit our Facebook page or thewitchinghourkwcw.blogspot.com for more!

Look for our upcoming show, called Portus!, next week!

Wrock Wrenditions!

The latest, the greatest, the newest wizard reinterpretions of muggle favorites. It's Season 2 - Episode 3 - Wrock Wrenditions.

Wrockstravaganza? We wish.

Bad news, dear listeners.

Because of the poor audio quality of last week's wrockstravaganza, we won't have a podcast version for that episode. Fortunately, it was a special show featuring our favorite tunes, so you're not missing out on too many factoids or info on the latest flicks. If you are dying to know what we played, find our group on Facebook or e-mail us at thewitchinghour.kwcw@gmail.com and we'll let you know what songs you should BUY to support wizard rockers.

We'll have this week's show up soon, promise.

FIRST WEEK DOUBLE DOSE??

Hey guys!

Sara and I are doing a special 2-hour show tonight from 8-10 PM (Pacific Time)! We'll be playing some of our favorite wrock songs and doing some Tales of Beedle the Bard reading. So if you didn't get enough HP in your day yesterday, tune in tonight! (And if you can't tune in tonight, look out for the podcast.)

luv,
Sara+Mehera
